Week 39 — stripped back.

Orchestra:

* Tangible Waves Starter Rack 2 with wonkystuff mm33 matrix mixer
* Sennhesier e912

There has been a conversation in the AE Modular regarding 'sequencerless sequencing', and it struck me that the mm33 is an ideal medium for this as it can be used to combine multiple CV sources in different ways to produce potentially interesting outcomes.

The patch for this piece consists of two LFOs (at different rates) and the output of the S&H module (fed from the noise module) connected to the inputs of the mm33, and then the x, y, z outputs connected to the CV inputs of three oscillators. The oscillators are fed through my two filters and their cutoffs also modulated. One LFO is used to trigger an envelope to give a pulse to the whole thing.

The way that the LFOs phase against each other created a very nice moving drone, which I actually listened to for ages before hitting record! Small changes to the mm33 controls, combining different CV sources at differing levels gives quite a change o the 'melody'. For a more 'musical' track of course a quantizer (or three) would be useful…

Personally I get an early Tangerine Dream feel from this one (Alpha Centauri, or Atem).

The mix used a touch of Native Instruments' Replika on the external mic and on the 'melody'/pulse top line to give a bit of width to the mix. Feeding the drone through the lofi-delay module whilst slowly modulating the delay time gives a chorus/Boards Of Canada feel also…
